Safari Reader hides page navigation: how to return to the full view

If a reference article loses navigation in Safari Reader, check the view before assuming that the website removed its menu.

UpdatedEditorial review

If a reference article loses navigation in Safari Reader, check the view before assuming that the website removed its menu. Leave Reader and compare the same URL. The scenario is hypothetical, not a device test.

Confirm the simplified view first

Hypothetical example: You open a public reference article and can see its heading and paragraphs, but the website’s top navigation is missing. Note what the page currently looks like. Has the text been reformatted? Does the page appear unusually focused on the article? Does the page menu show an option related to Reader?

Apple describes Reader as a streamlined view for supported webpages, while availability varies by page. See Apple’s guide to using Reader in Safari. Therefore, missing navigation in the current view is not, by itself, evidence that the website is broken or that its menu was deleted.

Use Hide Reader to return to the normal view

On the same Safari page, open the page menu. If Reader is available and currently active, choose Hide Reader. Safari should then return to the page’s ordinary presentation. Look again at the area where the navigation normally appears, and compare it with the earlier view using the same address.

For example, before leaving Reader, the hypothetical article shows only its heading and body text. After choosing Hide Reader, the site name and section links appear again. That comparison supports the explanation that Reader had hidden those elements from view. If nothing returns, it only shows that the ordinary page currently does not display the navigation; it does not prove a website failure.

What it means when Reader is unavailable

If the page menu has no Reader-related option, treat that as a limitation of the particular webpage, not proof that Safari or the site is malfunctioning. Do not invent another control or assume every page supports this view.

This example concerns a public reference article. Reader may not suit complex interactive content. A display difference does not establish account status or whether a feature was deleted.
